WE'RE BACK!

Welcome back to the 2011-2012 Daisy Girl Scout Year! We are so happy that all of our girls returned and that we could add two more to the troop. Please make sure that you have registered online or that you have mailed in your check otherwise you will not be recognized by the Girl Scouts and unable to sell cookies or attend GS functions.

If you have yet to sign up for the movie event for November 5th, do it soon, they sell out quick! This year's movie is Puss N Boots. Its a fun time and easy way to get a patch!

Our first two meeting went fabulously. Working in a classroom after school hours seems to be fun for the girls. Hopefully it stays that way! We are working on earning our yellow petal, the friendly and helpful petal. You just might see random daisy notes around your house as our girls learn how to be more friendly and helpful.

Our next meeting (October 29th) will be cancelled due to our sister Daisy scout troop hosting a Halloween party. This is a great socializing event for the girls and parents who chose to stay. The girls will do 4-5 stations of fun. If you choose to bring a snack to share, out sister troop request that it is healthy as there will be treats given out at the stations. The party time is from 5 - 7. The address is 5806 Del Trigo Lane. Costumes are optional.  I will say that I think everyone came in costume last year.

We will have a field trip during the month of November. Details to come...

Thank you all for your support. If you have yet to donate your $20 for this year, please do as at the next meeting.

Lotsa Recaps!

Valentine Party was a huge success! Parents and kids were happy with all of our stations and hard work. Thank you Heidi Brown for organizing the day for us. A bigger thank you for leaving your sick baby to help end the meeting. The girls were so happy to see you!

Feb 18th Meeting - During our last meeting we introduced the Orange Petal, Being Responsible For What I Say and Do. Heidi and I explained what this meant, performed a skit to show what it means and then went around the circle with each girl sharing an idea of what the petal means to them. Over the next couple meetings, we will be doing various things on how to be responsible. One station that night was to make our Responsible Hands Chart. Please being this back to us at the March 4th meeting! Hopefully you all had some Responsible Hands helping you around the house over the last 2 weeks. Our other station was fun and simple bracelet making. To reinforce being Responsible For What I Say and Do, we stressed to the girls to not reach around others to grab a bead that you want. We asked them to use their words and manners if something was out of their reach, and for their friend to politely hand them what they want. It's so rewarding to see our girls listening, learning and being polite to one another! We ended the meeting with a couple of games. Heidi and I are learning that by Friday night, all of our girls are a wee bit tired and not that focused when we do more than one station. We have found over the last couple of meetings that they really enjoy starting or ending the meeting with fun old-fashioned games.

Thinking Day - Thinking Day was a blast! Our girls loved trading their pins and receiving other Troop's SWAPPS. It was a ton of fun traveling to different countries, sampling different foods and learning about other cultures.

Cookie Sale at Safeway - While I missed the sale due to sick child, Heidi called and informed me that everyone had a good time and that we sold A LOT of cookies! Way to go Daisies and Daisy Mommies!! Thank you all for giving up a part of your Sunday and a BIG THANK YOU to Sandy for taking care of the nut/cookie sales! This is a huge job that we so appreciate you doing.

See you all on Friday!

FYI - Our meeting on March 18th is cancelled. We have a field trip to the Clayton Library schedule for March 16th at 3:30. Let's meet in front of the library at 3:15.

World Thinking Day

Thinking Day was first created in 1926 at the fourth Girl Guide/Girl Scout International Conference held at Girl Scouts of the USA's Camp Edith Macy (now called Edith Macy Conference Center). Conference attendees decided that there should be a special day for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from around the world to "think" of each other and give thanks and appreciation to their "sister" Girl Scouts. The delegates chose February 22 as the date for Thinking Day because it was the mutual birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout movement, and his wife, Olave, who served as World Chief Guide. To emphasize the global aspect of Thinking Day, members at the 30th World Conference, held in Ireland in 1999, changed the name from Thinking Day to World Thinking Day.

World Thinking Day will be held on February 26th at Concord High School, 4200 Concord Blvd., Concord 94521 in the Multi-Use Room.

We should all try to be there by 9:10/9:15 so that we can walk in as a troop. Please wear you Daisy Smock!

The schedule of the day is as follows...
9:30 to 10:00: Welcome Flag Ceremony and Announcements
10:00 to 12:00: Visit Booths (booths will be set up as countries. Our girls will be receiving passports that will be stamped as they travel from place to place). We will announce at the halfway point, so the groups can switch places.
12:00 to 12:30: Closing Friendship Circle and make new friends.

February 4th Recap

Another successful meeting! As the girls arrived, Heidi and I got them busy decorating invitations for our Valentine's Party. Reminder, this party is on Valentines Day at the Dana Farms Clubhouse, 3-4:30.

After starting the meeting with our normal flag ceremony, we discussed more about being considerate and caring. The girls took turns telling something that they did over the past two weeks that they considering to be considerate and caring. Our girls are turning into very kind little ladies!

We sent home the light green petal (in the same bag as their SWAPP pins) last night for being Considerate and Caring. The girls earned this petal by carolling at Diamond Terrace, participating in the Color A Smile project, and sharing what they like about each of their Daisy sisters. I'm still working on the completion of that project. I promise you will see it soon!

Our two stations last night were decorating hearts and assembling Daisy pins for World Thinking Day. There was a brief description of what a SWAPP is but in case that paper was lost, here it is again...

Swaps, the tradition of Girl Scouts exchanging keepsakes, started long ago when Girl Scouts and Girl Guides first gathered for fun, song, and making new friends. Swaps were widely exchanged at national Girl Scout Senior Roundups in the 1950's and 1960's. In more recent years, some Girl Scouts describe the types of objects now preferred as swaps by calling them:

Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere.

Swaps are still the perfect way for Girl Scouts to meet each other and promote friendship. Each one is a memory of a special event or Girl Scout Sister.

Please keep the pins in a safe place until World Thinking Day. All twelve should be brought to WTD.

We ended our meeting with a new game that Miss Heidi taught us. I think it was a great game that had the girls introducing themselves to each other and sharing some of their favorite foods, colors, etc.

We do have a field trip set up to the Clayton Library on March 16th at 3:30. More info will be sent out soon...

January 21st Recap

We had a great meeting even though we were missing some of our Daisy sisters!

We started our evening off coloring a Zinni, the caring and considerate flower. After starting the meeting with our flag ceremony and circle, the girls broke off into groups for stations. Stick with our last meeting Winter Theme, we had two cold weather stations set up. At Heidi's station, our girls made adorable snowman magnets out of Popsicle sticks and with our wonderful helper Caitlyn, the girls played a few exciting games of Winter Bingo. While the stations were going on, the girls sat one on one with me to talk about what we liked best about each of our Daisy sisters. The results of this will be coming to you shortly!

We ended the meeting with delicious heart shaped sandwiches made by Sandy Coyne.

A few upcoming events Heidi and I would like you to know about....

Feb 14th - We are having a Valentines Party at the clubhouse with our sister Daisy Troop. The party will be from 3-4:30. Invitations will be sent home at the next meeting. If your daughter wants to give out Valentines to our troop, please send them with her at the next meeting. I would rather not hand them out at the party in case the other troops feeling were to be hurt. Unless you want to by enough for both troops. That choice is up to you.

A field trip to the Library is in the works for sometime in March. We will be getting library cards for any of the girls who have yet to do so, hearing a story from the librarian and checking out a book. The girls will be responsible for bringing this book to the next meeting after the trip. This will get them one step closer to the Being Responsible for What I Say and Do Petal.
We will announce the date as soon as we know it.

Also, we are canceling one meeting in March due to the Mount Diablo Auction/Fundraiser. The March 18th meeting will be cancelled. Sorry for any inconvenience.

See you all next week!

JANUARY 7th MEETING RECAP

Our girls were happy to be back with their Daisy sisters on Friday! After starting the meeting with our normal Flag ceremony, we shared our favorite parts of Christmas and Winter Break. Seems like we had a lot of busy families over break!

Since it has been so cold lately, Heidi and I decided to base out meeting around winter weather. At one station, we made penguins out of toilet paper rolls, while doing this I explained how we are working towards our Use Resources Wisely petal. At Heidi's station, the girls cut out snowflakes, listened to a story and learned a new game called "Move Your Buns". At our last station, the girls learned about a great organization called Color A Smile. They are a non profit company who collects crayon drawings from school children. Every month they distribute these drawings to Nursing Homes, Meals on Wheels Programs, Children's Hospitals, Veteran's Hospitals and many more places all across the country. Their goal is to make people smile! By coloring these pages, our girls moved even closer to achieving their Caring and Considerate Petal.

We ended our meeting with a yummy snack and a delicious cupcake celebrating Kate and Emma's birthday.
